Problem Statement

Increasing volume of e-waste, its improper management and lack of scientific disposal methods lead to negative effects on human health and environment due to hazardous substances. Therefore, there is need of reduction in e-waste generation by various practices.

Overview

The product of exponential growth in Population x Affluence x Technology with modernization & ease of lifestyle has led to ever increasing e-waste generation potential that needs immediate attention in terms of its effective management and disposal methods. As technology continues to advance and become more prevalent in our daily lives, the volume of electronic devices being produced and discarded is increasing at an alarming rate. This electronic waste contains hazardous materials such as lead, mercury and cadmium that can have negative impacts on human health and the environment if not managed and disposed of properly. The challenge is to find sustainable and effective solutions to address this issue, including but not limited to the 3R principle of Reduce, Reuse & Recycle of e-waste combined with promoting responsible consumer behavior that the prima facie principle of Hon’ble Prime Ministers LiFE mission that envisions replacing the prevalent 'use-and-dispose' economy—governed by mindless and destructive consumption—with a circular economy, which would be defined by mindful and deliberate utilization. The Mission intends to nudge individuals to undertake simple acts in their daily lives that can contribute significantly to climate change when embraced across the world.

LiFE plans to leverage the strength of social networks to influence social norms surrounding climate. The Mission plans to create and nurture a global network of individuals, namely ‘Pro-Planet People’ (P3), who will have a shared commitment to adopt and promote environmentally friendly lifestyles. Through the P3 community, the Mission seeks to create an ecosystem that will reinforce and enable environmentally friendly behaviors to be self-sustainable

Extending the life of electronic devices

Encouraging the repair, upgrade and reuse of electronic devices can help extend their lifespan and reduce the need for new devices to be manufactured.

Promoting responsible consumption

Educating consumers on the impact of their consumption choices and encouraging them to purchase high-quality, durable and repairable products can help reduce e-waste.

Implementing take-back programs

Manufacturers can establish take-back programs, where consumers can return their old devices to the manufacturer for proper disposal or recycling.

Improving recycling and refurbishing infrastructure

Governments and private organizations can invest in developing recycling and refurbishing infrastructure and technologies to ensure that e-waste is scientifically disposed, recycled and refurbish.

Designing for circularity

Designing products with circularity in mind, such as modular components and materials that are easy to disassemble and reuse, can help reduce e-waste and promote a circular economy.

Donating or selling

Another way to reduce e-waste is by donating or selling your electronics. This is an effective way to extend the life of a device and ensure that it is used by someone else who needs it.

  3. a. Technology : How technically impressive was the hack? Was the technical problem tackled by the team difficult? Did it use a particularly clever technique or multiple components? Did the technology involved make you go "WoW"?
  4. b. Design : Did the team put thought into the user experience? How well designed is the interface? For a website, this might be about how beautiful the CSS or graphics are. For a hardware project, it might be more about how good the human interaction is (e.g. is it easy to use or does it use a cool interface?).
  5. c. Completion : Does the hack work? Did the team achieve everything they wanted?
  6. d. Sustainability : Is the solution sustainable?
  7. e. Market Value : How is your hack adding value to the world? What is the real life use and importance of the product? Is it affordable and practical to be used in the real world?
  8. f. Implementation : How easy and affordable is implementation? Is the solution worth implementing?
  9. 3) These criteria will guide judges but ultimately judges are free to make decisions based on their professional experience which projects are the most impressive and most deserving.
